Is like diplomacy backwards. Diplomacy is telling your opponent what he wants to hear so he doesn't try to kill you. Humor is telling him what he doesn't want to hear in a way that makes him so puzzled about his own feelings that you actually get away with it.

Shortly: humor is the evolved mechanism that allows us to tell the truth without leading our genes into immediate extinction.
